Ok, so after reading The Haunting of Hill House I went and read Shirley Jackson's We have Always lived in the Castle. Jackson sense of tone and style remain building a dreamlike and unsettling atmosphere. The family is off, the characters are odd, and isolated, by choice yet the setting feels claustrophobic also. The parents were killed by poison, but the murder remained unsolved though accusations point to the daughter Constance. A lot of relationship tension. I would say it reads more like a drama mystery then a horror but sometimes gothic horror can be more melodramatic in tone.
