Alirght I swear this is the last Shirley Jackson story I'll review. The Lottery was a short story and a very simple premise and the first work of Shirley's I was familiar with though I didn't know it was her work. The dystopia story features a town that has a yearly lottery drawing. This annual tradition involves drawing lots and the one with the black spot is stoned to death by the town. Simple yet effective. Without stories like this, it is unlikely things like The Hunger Games would be written later. The reason it's horror is because it feels like it could happen, like society could develop a seemingly just system that still holds cruelty. That any one of us could draw the dot, and know that those we know will then end us...
